The department was started in B.I.T.
in 1986.Since then it has been catering to the needs of excellent managers
in the production industry. It is now headed by Dr.M.C Jagath M.E. ,Ph.D. The teaching staff is well experienced in teaching and research,
exposing the students to industrial environment, production and management.
Industrial Engineering is concerned with the design,
improvement and installation of integrated system of men, material and
equipment. It refers to that multi disciplinary function which encompasses
various areas of Science, technology, economics, engineering and operations
management that is used for achieving higher overall productivity and
profitability leading to an economic uplift of society as a whole and
the industry, business or services in particular. Keeping this broad
perspective in mind, the highly expert faculty has ensured that the
students churned out from this department are of the highest caliber.
Thus, we at the industrial engineering & management department have
resolved to keep our commitment to the present day management of technical
industries.
The department of Industrial Engineering and Management
of B.I.T. has a well equipped virtual NC lab, industrial engineering
lab, production technology lab, measurement lab and gauging lab. A state
of art computer labs with software like ERP, IGRIP and QUEST. This ensures
that the students of the department get enough practical experience
besides the theoretical concepts.

Laboratories:
CAD: The CAD laboratory is furnished
with modern computers with software like C / C++, AUTOCAD etc.
CAM: This is the hardware
section equipped with CNC milling CNC drilling machines table top robot
etc.
Metrology Laboratory: With
instruments like autocollimator, tool maker's microscope, UMM etc; the
lab inculcates the measurement and calibration skills.
Machine Tools & Metal
Cutting Laboratory: It has more than 20 lathes, shaping and planning,
grinding machines and also HMT precision lathe and drilling machines
for students to practice machining skills.
Manufacturing Laboratory:
This lab is having jig boring, draw bench & HMT CNC machine to make
students aware & practice advanced manufacturing concepts.
Industrial engineering Laboratory:
It is equipped with projectors to view films on material handling recording
techniques etc. The students put to use the rules of work study &
ergonomics for developing appropriate methods, layout & designs.
Foundry & Welding Shop:
It has equipment for melting, molding & casting of metals. The welding
shop besides having the conventional welding equipment is now equipped
with modern welding facilities.
RDBMS & SQL Laboratory:
This lab is equipped with software like ORACLE, MS Access.
Simulation laboratory:
This lab is furnished with latest software of ERP like IBCS, Makess,
Promodel/Arena / Deneb Simulation packages etc.
Project Work:
Besides the above, engineers are necessarily exposed to the industrial
environment during the 6th and 8th semester, for duration of 8 to 10
weeks. During this period they are made to undertake and enter into
practical arenas of day to day industrial problems. Projects done by
IEM students are:-
1. Human resource management in ITI
2. Work place design
3. Review of MIS in BEML
4. Production scheduling in engineering industry - a case study
5. Simulation of plant layout using QUEST
6. Formation of cells in plunger area of MICO plant
